The Giants Causeways, situated on the North coast of Ireland, was formed some 50-60 million years ago as a result of repeat outpourings of volcanic basalt, during the Tertiary period of the earth’s evolution. This is an area of approximately 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption.
